How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets?

Once a week? Once a month? Here is how often to actually wash your sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and mattress protector — and how the right routine makes them last for years.

Published by Dove & Thread

It is the bedding question everyone quietly wonders about and few people ask out loud. The honest answer is probably more often than you are washing them now — but the good news is that a simple routine keeps your bed hygienic and, done right, actually makes your sheets last longer rather than wearing them out.

The short answer: once a week

For sheets and pillowcases, once a week is the standard to aim for. You spend roughly a third of your life in bed, and in that time your sheets collect sweat, body oils, dead skin cells, and everything those feed. A weekly wash keeps all of that from building up.

If that feels like a lot, every two weeks is the absolute outer limit for most people — and even then, pillowcases should be doing better (more on that below).

Why it matters

An unwashed bed is not just about how the sheets feel. Body oil and dead skin are food for dust mites, whose waste is a common trigger for allergies, congestion, and irritated skin. Regular washing in a warm cycle keeps that ecosystem in check. If you have allergies, if you sweat at night, or if you sleep with pets, lean towards the more frequent end.

Pillowcases: more often

Your face is on your pillowcase for hours every night, and pillowcases collect oil, sweat, hair product, and anything left on your skin. For clearer skin especially, twice a week is a good target for pillowcases — it is one of the easiest changes you can make. Keeping a couple of spare pillowcases on hand makes a mid-week swap effortless.

Duvet covers and the rest

ItemHow often
PillowcasesTwice a week (weekly minimum)
Sheets (fitted & flat)Weekly
Duvet coverEvery 1–2 weeks
Mattress protectorEvery 1–2 months
Duvet insert / pillowsEvery 3–6 months

A mattress protector is the quiet hero here: because it sits between your sheet and the mattress, it takes the spills and sweat that would otherwise reach the mattress itself — and it is far easier to throw a protector in the wash every month than to deal with a stained mattress you cannot clean.

How to wash so they last longer

Frequent washing does not have to mean wearing your sheets out — harsh washing does. A few habits protect the fibre:

Our full care guide goes deeper on washing and drying, and if you are wondering when a set is genuinely past it, our guide to replacing sheets covers the signs.

The two-set rule

The single best thing you can do for both hygiene and longevity is to own two sets of sheets and alternate them. One is always fresh on the bed while the other is in the wash — and neither wears out quickly.
