Nobody gets excited about a mattress protector. It is invisible, it is not the thing you show guests, and it feels like an optional extra. It is also, pound for pound, the highest-return purchase on your bed — and the one most people regret skipping.
The maths
A good mattress is a significant investment meant to last many years. A protector costs a small fraction of that. Its entire job is to stand between your mattress and everything that would otherwise shorten its life — and once a mattress is stained or soaked, there is no meaningful way to clean it. You cannot put a mattress in the wash.
Many mattress warranties are voided by staining. A protector is often what keeps that cover valid — worth checking your own warranty wording.
What it actually protects against
- Body moisture — everyone perspires overnight, and it soaks in permanently
- Spills — coffee in bed, a glass of water, a child being sick
- Body oils and skin cells — what dust mites feed on
- Allergens — a barrier layer keeps them out of the mattress core
That last point matters more than people expect. Once dust mites and allergens are established deep in a mattress, you cannot wash them out. A protector you can machine wash keeps that whole problem at the surface. Our washing guide suggests every one to two months.
The old objection: crinkly and hot
Most people who dislike protectors are remembering an old plastic-backed one — noisy, sweaty, and slippery. That is a fair objection to that product, but the technology moved on. A modern protector uses a thin breathable membrane laminated to a soft fabric top: waterproof from below, air-permeable from above, and silent. If yours crinkles, it is simply an old design.

What to look for
- Breathable waterproofing — a membrane, not a plastic sheet
- Silence — if it crinkles when you press it, keep looking
- A deep skirt — it must actually stay on your mattress; ours has a 20-inch drop and fits up to 18 inches
- Machine washable — a protector you cannot easily wash defeats the point
The verdict
Yes — provided it is a good one. A protector that sleeps hot or crackles will end up in a cupboard, protecting nothing. A quiet, breathable one you forget is there will quietly add years to your mattress.
