Most guest rooms are assembled from leftovers — the old mattress, the sheets that no longer match, one flat pillow. It is also the room where small, cheap decisions have an outsized effect, because your guest notices everything in a space they are not used to.

Start with the bed, and only the bed

Guests forgive dated furniture and a small wardrobe. They do not forgive a bad night's sleep. If you spend on one thing, spend it here — and specifically on what touches them: sheets, pillows, and a protector. A modest bed with excellent linens beats an expensive bed with tired ones every time.

Choose white

Pillows: offer a choice

You do not know whether your guest sleeps on their side, back, or front, and pillow preference is intensely personal. Protect what you cannot wash

A guest bed sees irregular use and unfamiliar bodies, which is exactly when spills and accidents happen. A mattress protector is non-negotiable here: it is the cheapest possible insurance on the most expensive item in the room, and it washes.

The small hotel touches

• Fresh towels on the bed — a folded stack, so they never have to ask
• Empty space — clear two drawers and a few hangers; guests hate living from a suitcase
• A bedside surface — somewhere for a phone, glasses, and a glass of water
• Reachable light — a lamp they can turn off without crossing the room
• Somewhere to charge — an accessible socket near the bed
• A spare blanket — folded at the foot, so nobody has to ask for one at midnight
