Shop for towels and you will meet GSM immediately. Unlike thread count, GSM is refreshingly literal — and once you know the ranges, choosing a towel becomes simple.
What GSM means
GSM stands for grams per square metre: quite literally the weight of one square metre of the fabric. A higher GSM means more cotton packed into the same area — denser pile, more absorbency, more plushness, and a longer drying time. A lower GSM means a lighter, thinner, faster-drying towel.
The ranges

For a bath towel you use daily, 600–800 GSM is the range worth paying for — genuinely plush and absorbent, without taking forever to dry.
Higher is not always better
A very heavy towel holds more water, which means it takes longer to dry — and a towel that never fully dries between uses starts to smell, particularly in a humid bathroom or a small flat. It is also heavier in the wash. That is why hotels do not simply buy the heaviest towel available; they choose a weight that balances luxury against turnaround.
Why different items use different weights
A good towel range is not one GSM across the board. Our bath towels are 710 GSM for plushness, hand towels 625 GSM so they dry quickly between uses, face towels 610 GSM for softness on skin, and bath mats 790 GSM because they need to absorb far more and stand up underfoot. Matching weight to purpose is the mark of a considered range rather than a single fabric cut into different sizes.
What GSM does not tell you
Like thread count, GSM can be gamed. A heavy towel made from short-staple cotton will feel dense but shed lint, pill, and go rough — exactly the failure described in our pilling guide. Ring-spun long-staple cotton at 700 GSM beats a cheap 900 GSM towel every time. Weight tells you how much cotton; it says nothing about how good that cotton is.
