Walk down any bedding aisle and you will find two very different kinds of sheets sitting side by side: pure cotton, and microfiber. They can look almost identical in the packet. They are not the same thing at all — and the difference shows up on the first warm night and every wash thereafter.
What microfiber actually is
Microfiber is not a natural material. It is an ultra-fine synthetic yarn — usually polyester, sometimes a polyester and nylon blend — spun far thinner than a human hair and woven into a dense, brushed fabric. That brushing is what gives microfiber its initial softness. It is essentially very fine plastic.
Because it is synthetic and mass-produced, microfiber is cheap to make, which is its single biggest selling point. It also resists wrinkling and holds dye well, so it photographs nicely online.
What pure cotton is
Cotton is a natural plant fibre. Each strand is a hollow tube that absorbs moisture, releases heat, and softens as it is washed. Long-staple cotton — the kind we weave — uses longer individual fibres, which means fewer loose ends, a smoother surface, and far greater durability. The problem microfiber can't solve: heat
This is the big one. Synthetic fibres do not breathe. Microfiber traps warmth and holds moisture against your skin instead of wicking it away, so body heat and sweat build up through the night. If you have ever woken up clammy under sheets that felt soft when you got in, that is microfiber doing what plastic does.
Cotton is the opposite. Its hollow fibres let air move and pull moisture away from the body, which is exactly why it stays cool. For anyone in a warm climate or anyone who sleeps hot, it is not a close contest. (More on this in our guide for hot sleepers.)

Microfiber's softness is front-loaded. It feels best in the shop and slowly degrades: the fine synthetic surface pills, roughens, and starts to cling. It also holds onto body oils and odour in a way cotton does not, because there is nowhere for them to wash out of. Cotton runs the other way — it usually feels its best after a few washes, and a good set keeps that hand for years.
Microfiber can feel softer than a low-quality cotton on day one. But compare it to a properly finished long-staple cotton and the cotton wins on feel too — and it is still winning years later, long after the microfiber has gone rough.
Sustainability
Every wash of a synthetic sheet sheds microplastic fibres into the water system. At the end of its short life, microfiber is plastic waste that does not break down. Cotton is a renewable plant fibre that biodegrades. If the environmental footprint of your bedding matters to you, that is a meaningful difference — and it is one of the reasons we only work in pure cotton.
So why does microfiber exist?
Price, mostly. Microfiber is genuinely cheaper up front, wrinkles less, and is hard to tell apart from cotton in a photograph. For a short-term or budget purchase it does a job. But "cheaper per set" and "cheaper over time" are not the same thing: a cotton set that lasts five years and sleeps better every night is the better value, not just the better sheet.
